There are a total of 14 highest mountains in the world that rise above 8,000 meters. Among them, Manaslu is the eighth-highest peak, standing at an elevation of 8,163 meters above sea level. It is part of the Mansiri Himal subrange of the Himalayan range and is located in the historic district of Gorkha, in the Gandaki Province of Nepal.

The mountain was first ascended by the Japanese mountaineering team on May 9, 1956, and the first winter ascent was accomplished by Polish mountaineers Maciej Berbeka and Ryszard Gajewski on January 12, 1984. The north-east face of the mountain is considered the easiest route for climbing.
